Session 12: Creating Inclusive Learning Environments for Dyslexic Learners | 7/12/2023

As we celebrate the diversity of learners, it’s crucial to recognize and address the unique needs of those with dyslexia. What does it mean to learn with dyslexia? In this session, we’ll delve into four key learning strategies designed to meet the unique needs of students grappling with dyslexia and aim to give a comprehensive idea about what it means to learn with dyslexia of phonics rules. Through a few simple changes it’s possible to make the classroom inclusive and empower students. All of the material will be compiled in a detailed handout including links, which will be sent to all participants in the webinar.

Cathy has a degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages (DELTA) following her CELTA certification;training in Jolly Phonics, pronunciation for young learners; and is certified as a Cambridge speaking examiner. She comes from England and has travelled extensively, teaching English since 2007 from Vietnam to New Zealand, finally settling in Italy in 2016. Her unique approach to teaching has led to her participation in many interesting projects focussed on teaching and training teachers in making the English classroom more communicative, with a specialisation in the creation of interactive material for online courses. Cathy has been MLA Assistant Academic Manager since January 2023, managing over 1700 students in MLA’s successful Get Ready online courses and creating the new MLA TASktime eBooks for 2023. She was Director of Studies in MLA Uxbridge in 2023.

Rebecca was born in Yorkshire, England and worked in both sales and customer service before deciding to become an ESL teacher and head to Italy in 2013. Her Italian adventure started in summer camps where she fell in love with the amazing scenery, weather, people, and food. Since that first summer, she’s taught in private and state schools all over the country and lived in Treviso, Puglia, Rome, and Sicily. Rebecca has taught all ages and levels of English and prepared many students for Cambridge, Trinity and IELTs exams. Rebecca first worked for MLA as a teacher in 2018 in York and Reading before returning the following year to work as Assistant Director of Studies in Worcester. She returned to MLA last year to join the academic team for MLA Onboard on the MSC Grandiosa cruise ship. She has since worked as Director of Studies in MLA centres in Worcester, Galway, Dulwich and Uxbridge. Since 2022 Rebecca has been part of MLA’s Academic Team.

Josh Williams was born in Perth, Australia and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Psychology from the University of Western Australia. He completed a CELTA teaching certificate at Milner College, Perth.
