Aspettando Halloween con due autori horror: Edgar Allan Poe e Stephen King

“ I will show you fear in a bandful of dust”

(T.S.Elliot)

“Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston in 1809 in a family of travelling actors. At the age of three he was left an orphan and was taken into the household of John Allan who treated him like a son. Allan took him on a five year visit to England and when they came back to the States he was sent to University. There he started gambling and contracted debts and eventually quarreled with his foster father. He joined the Army and remained in it for four years. After he left the Military Academy of West Point he started a literary career. He worked as a journalist and wrote literary texts. Among his poems is “The Raven”. His large production of short stories include “The black cat”, “The fall of the house of Usher”. Poe started to drink and gradually made it a compulsion. At the age of twenty seven he married his thirteen year old cousin but the couple was always short of money. After his wife’s death his drinking became more frequent and serious. He died in Baltimore in 1849.

  1. What happened to him at the age of three?
  2. How long did he live in England?
  3. Did he receive a university education?
  4. How long was he in the army?
  5. What did he do after he left the Army?
  6. When did he get married?
  7. Did he have any financial problems?
  8. Did he have any health problems?

  • Before you read the story express a personal opinion on the following questions
  1. Can insane people distinguish between what is real and what is not real?
  2. Does guilt often make criminals confess?
  3. Do people who have committed crimes always act nervously?
  4. Is it possible for monotonous, constant sound to agitate a person?
  • Before you read the story analyse the title of this text.
  1. What kind of story do you imagine from the title?
  2. Look up the expression “ tell-tale” in a monolingual dictionary and find out what it means
  3. Can you predict what the story is going to be about?

  1. The story is told in the first person, by the main character. The narrator is a murderer who tells why and how he did the deed. Where do you think the narrator is now?
  2. To whom is he talking?
  3. What are the main arguments that he appeals in order to convince the reader that he is not mad?
  4. Does the narrator feel guilty?
  5. Does the old man ever realise the narrator is the room?
  6. How does the narrator kill the old man?
  7. Does the narrator get rid of the body?
  8. Why do the policemen visit the house?
  9. Is the narrator worried?
  10. What makes the narrator change attitude?
  11. Whose heart does the beating refer to?
  12. How does the first paragraph create suspence?

  • Charles Brockden Brown
  • William Godwin
  • Nathaniel Hawthorne ( The house of the seven Gables)
  • Henry James ( The turn of the Screw)

STEPHEN KING, Step 3

Lettura di “ It”, capitolo 13.

  1. Read the passage and state:
  • What form it takes on this time?
  • Which of the Losers are the protagonists of the experience?
  • How they escape?
  1. What evidence is there that down in the cellar the boys wounded the monster?
  2. Focus on the expressions describing the Werewolf, and underline the details which are not typical of a human being
  3. Identify the moments in which the monster manages to hit them. What are the effects of its attacks?
  4. What aspects of a classic “ nightmare” are reflected in this passage?
  5. It has been said that it can be read as a metaphor of society. Consider the summary of the novel and discuss what aspects of society might be symbolized. Summarize your ideas in a few lines.

Negli anni ’70 e ’80 lo stile gotico era chiaro anche nell’abbigliamento: The Cure, Sister of Mercy o Marilyn Manson.
